The FAA and Local Police: Partners in UAS Operations Enforcement

In the April, 2017 edition of Air Line Pilot, it was reported that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) “receives more than 100 reports per month (emphasis added) of unsafe unmanned aircraft systems operations.”

Frightening, but apparently there are large numbers of operators who either aren’t aware of the regulations or just don’t care. Reports of dangerous drone operations, and even accidents with people, appear more commonplace. Many might just chalk this up to increasing use, but what about enforcement?

For those operators out there who are “taking their chances they won’t get caught” with an illegal or unsafe operation…beware. The FAA is providing assistance to local law enforcement and has issued this guidance sheet:

Please take notice that the FAA has been partnering with state and local law enforcement agencies to “…deter, detect, immediately investigate, and, as appropriate, pursue enforcement actions to stop unauthorized or unsafe UAS operations.”.

If you are planning a drone operation, either commercially or as a hobbyist, and are unsure of its legality, please call us at Anderson & Hughes, P.C. We can help.
